Bring back your oasis

Menopause is a natural biological process that occurs in women as they age. It is a gradual process that usually takes several years and involves several changes in a woman’s body.

As a result of this natural ageing process, the ovaries start to produce less estrogen and progesterone. This hormonal shift can cause a wide range of physical and emotional symptoms, including vaginal dryness.

Vaginal dryness can cause both physical and emotional distress leaving you with day-to-day discomfort and symptoms such as pain during sex and soreness in and around your vagina.

Our Partner Doctors can assist you with the medication you need to relieve menopause-related vaginal dryness symptoms.

Menopause Management

What is menopause?

Menopause is a natural biological process that marks the end of a woman’s reproductive years. It typically occurs between the ages of 45 and 55, with the average age of onset being around 51. During menopause, a woman’s body undergoes significant hormonal changes, specifically a decrease in estrogen production, which causes the cessation of menstrual cycles.

The process of menopause can take several years, and during this time, a woman may experience a variety of symptoms, including hot flashes, night sweats, mood changes, vaginal dryness, and decreased sex drive. Some women may also experience more severe symptoms, such as sleep disturbances, urinary incontinence, and joint pain.

While menopause is a natural part of the ageing process for women, it can have a significant impact on their physical and emotional health. Therefore, it is important for women to be aware of the signs and symptoms of menopause and to seek medical advice if they are experiencing any concerning symptoms.

What is vaginal dryness
Vaginal dryness is when the walls of your vagina get thinner and drier, caused by a change in the balance of your hormones around menopause. With less natural lubrication, you can be left feeling itchy and uncomfortable.

Vaginal dryness is a common problem that many women have at some point in their lives, but it usually occurs during perimenopause or menopause.

You may also experience vaginal dryness caused by hormone changes if you are breastfeeding, taking the contraceptive pill or have your womb removed (hysterectomy). If you’re experiencing vaginal dryness not related to menopause, please see your GP in person.

What are the symptoms of vaginal dryness?
Symptoms of vaginal dryness during menopause include:
  • Pain or discomfort during sex
  • Itching or soreness in and around your vagina
  • Experiencing UTIs more frequently
  • Needing to pee more often than usual
How can vaginal dryness be prevented and what can I do to treat it?
Steps can be taken to prevent or minimise the symptoms of vaginal dryness caused by menopause, such as avoiding the use of perfumed soaps, washes or douches in and around your vagina. It is also advised not to put creams or lotions like petroleum jelly inside your vagina as this can lead to an infection.

You may find the following helpful to relieve symptoms at home:

  • Using water-based lubricants before sex
  • Using vaginal moisturisers
  • Eating foods rich in plant oestrogens, like soy products or flaxseed
When should I see a doctor?
You should see a doctor if you’ve experienced vaginal dryness for a few weeks and it’s causing discomfort or affecting your daily life.
If you have also been experiencing unusual discharge or bleeding from your vagina, or bleeding after sex or in between your periods, we recommend speaking to a GP or one of our Partner Doctors.
