The pros of the pill

The most widely used birth control method for women aged between 16-45, the pill is popular for a few good reasons — it’s most effective if taken correctly, easy to use and can be stopped at any time.

Besides preventing unplanned pregnancy, the pill can also be used to regulate periods, making them less painful and lighter, as well as reduce PMS symptoms, and can even be used to treat acne.

Our Partner Doctors can assist you with over 30 different brands and generics of birth control, to find you a solution that works for your body and your budget.

Birth Control

How effective are birth control pills?
Birth control pills are over 99% effective when taken as prescribed. The more consistent you are at taking your pills, the more effective the medication will be. We understand that it can be hard to take a pill at the same time every day, however, if you don’t, the pill is only up to 91% effective. Individuals who miss a pill should use physical methods of birth control, such as condoms, for at least seven days. Doing so ensures that hormones return to levels that minimise the risk of pregnancy. Before beginning your birth control pill please make sure you read the informational pamphlet provided with your medication.
Is it normal for discharge to change when starting on a new birth control pill?
Yes, one of the ways birth control works is by thickening your natural discharge. It is normal for your discharge to change when you start taking birth control. However, if you notice any new colours, odours, or itching, please contact your existing primary doctor or assigned Partner Doctor through our Customer Care Team at support@contro.co.za.
Is my birth control going to make my periods more regular?
It depends on the type of birth control you are prescribed by our Partner Doctor. Some forms of birth control can make your periods more regular, irregular, or even disappear.
How long until my birth control is effective?
It depends on the type of birth control you have been prescribed. It is advised that you confirm your effective date with your assigned Partner Doctor directly during your initial consultation. The majority take a week to become effective, however, it is advisable that you and your partner use a backup form of birth control like condoms to ensure you are fully protected, during the first two weeks of use.
How many birth control pills do I get per order?
We will send you one month’s worth of pills every month. This is because our medical aid users can only claim one month of medication at a time. We are working hard to get all the medical aid providers to pay for three month’s worth of birth control pills upfront, and we will inform you when we have reached an agreement with them.

Birth Control Subscriptions

Can I get a prescription for my existing brand of birth control when I sign up to Contro?

Yes! We currently offer over 30 brands of birth control via our Partner Pharmacy.

As an existing birth control user, you will still be required to complete our secure online health questionnaire and have a once-off virtual consultation with one of our Partner Doctors in order for them to generate a new prescription for you. When completing your health assessment you will have the opportunity to request your existing brand of birth control. Your assigned Partner Doctor may ask a few extra health questions during your virtual consultation before confirming your prescription.

Does Contro replace my primary doctor?
No, Contro’s service offering does not replace your primary doctor. We save you time and money by offering you a supplementary online delivery and subscription service, and therefore your assigned Partner Doctor does not replace your primary doctor or GP, and is not responsible for your ongoing primary care.
Do I have to go back and see my assigned Partner Doctor for my repeat prescription?
No, our service saves you time and money by delivering your medication to an address of your choice for free every month. Please continue to see your primary doctor or GP throughout your Contro subscription for bi-annual check-ups. You must inform your assigned Partner Doctor with any changes in your physical or mental health as soon as you becomes aware of the change, to allow for your Partner Doctor to consider if changes need to be made to your ongoing treatment plan.
Your assigned Partner Doctor will authorise the issuing of your prescription every 6 months.
How much does Contro’s service cost?
Our service fee is R150 per month. This spreads out the cost of your doctor’s consultation and prescription fees over periods of six months at a time. We also provide free delivery within that fee to anywhere in the country.

All customers will pay our R150 service fee each month.

Cash customers will additionally be charged for the cost of their prescribed medication each month. The price can vary and will depend on which brand or generic your assigned Partner Doctor prescribes you. If you are new to birth control, you can select the amount you’re willing to spend a month all-in-all inclusive of our service fee on your health assessment.

The total subscription cost for cash customers will be between R240 – R400 p/m depending on the price of your prescribed medication.

The total subscription cost for medical aid customers will be R150 p/m.

How am I charged for my subscription plan?

All customers are charged their first month’s R150 service fee at checkout. This is non-refundable. After a successful consultation, cash customers will be charged again for the price of their prescribed medication.

For the preceding months of the subscription, cash customers will be charged our R150 service fee combined with the cost of their medication in a single transaction. The first subscription repeat cycle is shortened to 21-23 days to create a delivery-buffer for the preceding months, thereafter, customers are charged every 28 days for as long as they remain a subscriber.

Medical aid customers are only charged our R150 service fee on each subscription repeat date. As above, the first subscription repeat cycle is shortened to 21-23 days to create a delivery-buffer for the preceding months, thereafter, customers are charged every 28 days for as long as they remain a subscriber.

Subscribers may cancel anytime by emailing us at support@contro.co.za.

Can I claim through my medical aid?
Yes, but only for your medication costs. Medical aid customers are still required to pay our R150 service fee each month. We are working hard to get the medical aids to cover this service fee.

Our Partner Pharmacy will make the claim for your medication with your medical aid scheme each month. If your claim is unsuccessful we will reach out to you and confirm you are happy to switch to paying privately for your medication each month instead.

If you are unsure whether your medical aid scheme will cover your prescribed medication, or allow you to use your savings to pay for your prescribed medication, please contact your provider.

Will the price of my subscription change?
The SEP of your medication can be changed at any time by the Department of Health. This may impact the price of your subscription plan slightly month-to-month.

If you have any questions please contact our Customer Care Team at support@contro.co.za.

When and how is my medication delivered to me?
Our Partner Doctors offer consultations Monday – Friday excluding public holidays. We aim to offer you a consultation within 2 business days.

After a successful consultation, your assigned Partner Doctor will produce a repeat prescription for your prescribed medication which is sent electronically to our Partner Pharmacy. Our Partner Pharmacy will contact you telephonically to confirm your details and delivery address, and will make a claim on your behalf if you have provided medical aid details.

Their pharmacy team will prepare and despatch your medication to your chosen delivery address. Once your order has been despatched, delivery time is 1-3 business days.

You will receive an SMS from our Partner Pharmacy to notify you that your medication has been despatched each month. This will contain a tracking number that will allow you to track your medication with the applicable courier service here.

Please note, you cannot change your delivery address once payment has been processed and your prescription has been sent to our Partner Pharmacy for processing.
